7th July 2010WEYMOUTH: Junk yard art on show
A NEW art show in Weymouth focuses on creations using historic or reclaimed materials.
Scrappage Scheme Art will be held at Weymouth Reclamation Yard opposite the town centre railway station from July 17th-25th.
The exhibition is the brainchild of South West Artwork which invited some of the artists on its books to exhibit new work after finding the unique space hidden away behind the bus station that contains historic gems from as far back as the Victorian era.
The idea behind the show is for artists to use the space and its objects as a point of artistic inspiration.
Work will be shown from artists such as Nigel Slight, an Associate of the Royal College of Art and cross-discipline artist, Nigel Lord photographer and winner of the Dorchester Arts Open competition 2010, Ed Jones fine artist and Denis Mitchell award winner, as well as the successful illustrators textile artists and fine artists Nathan Castle, Sophie Fodden, Eve Hill and Laura Mulhern
South West Artwork co-founder Laura Mulhern said: “As we see plenty of government cuts looming in every sector of the country at the moment we thought this was a great time to put on a show that celebrates and encourages reclamation and recycling.
“The venue is really amazingly quirky and has plenty of objects the artists can work with to create inspired contemporary artwork.
“Putting on this show in order to increase footfall and subsequent trade to businesses such as The Reclamation Yard can only be a good thing.
“It also shows visitors new and inventive ways of using old pieces they could incorporate in their own homes. Every time I go there I always come home with something for the house.”
Entry to the event is free, all artwork will be available to buy and more details are available at www.southwest-artwork.co.uk.
